Ohioana Library Association: Grants for Creative Writers

OVERVIEW: The Ohioana Library Association prioritizes the work of Ohio creators.

IP TAKE: This funder supports Ohio writers through a modest grant and a book award.

PROFILE: Created in 1929, the Ohioana Library Association works to celebrate Ohio writers. It seeks to “collect, preserve, and promote the works of Ohio authors, artists, and musicians.” The association supports Ohio writers through the Ohioana Book Award and the Marvin Grant.

The annual Walter Rumsey Marvin Grant supports writers who were either born in Ohio or have lived in Ohio for a minimum of five years. Grantees must be age 30 or younger and must not have had a book published. The grant is for $1,000.

The Ohioana Book Award is “among the most prestigious […] state literary prizes in the nation” and recognizes the achievements of Ohio writers working in fiction, nonfiction, juvenile literature, young adult literature, poetry, and books about Ohio or an Ohioan. While the award does not provide funds directly, it does provide a degree of recognition that may lead to other sources of funding. Self-published entries are ineligible.
