PROFILE: Established in 1962, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation (NHCF) manages around 1,900 philanthropic funds and is based in Concord, New Hampshire. This is the community foundation for New Hampshire. It was formed with funds from the Spaulding-Potter Trusts and hired its first full-time executive director in 1968. Grantmaking includes children and youth, drug and alcohol addiction prevention, entrepreneurs, workforce development, and local science exploration.
The NHCF has competitive grant programs that support New Hampshire-based groups in its areas of interest. The foundation also awards grants to nonprofits in strategic areas of interest, such as increasing youth opportunities and fighting substance abuse. There are also NHCF grant opportunities for the Entrepreneurs’ Fund, the Excellence in Nonprofit Management Award, the Mary Gale Foundation Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund, Nonprofit Loan Program, Wellborn Ecology Fund, and the Upper Connecticut River Mitigation and Enhancement Fund. There are several funds, fellowships, sabbaticals, scholarships, and grant opportunities here for artists, teachers, and public officials. NHCF has regional advisory boards that work in specific local communities. The regional boards are in the following locations: Capital Region, Lakes Region, Manchester Region, Monadnock Region, Nashua Region, North County Region, Piscataqua Region, and the Upper Valley Region.
In a recent year, the foundation received $57 million in charitable gifts and gave $46 million in grants and scholarships. Over $40 million is given out annually. Current financial data can be viewed here.
The foundation reviews unsolicited requests for certain type of funding. The foundation’s annual meeting typically takes place in early June. In previous cycles, community grants program deadlines for express grants have fallen in late-March and for unrestricted grants in early-August.
