PROFILE: Established in 1985, the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF) is a health legacy funder based in Wichita, Kansas. The sale of the Wesley Medical Center created this foundation to support two organizations that later became KHF. The foundation aims to “improve the health of all Kansans,” and it envisions “a culture in which every Kansan can make healthy choices where they live, work, and play.” It funds local efforts for health, access to care, healthy behaviors, civic and community engagement, and educational attainment.
The Kansas Health Foundation’s access to care grants address the health care coverage needs of low-income residents because one in six Kansas adults lack coverage. Healthy behaviors grants focus on preventing tobacco use and obesity in the state, which are leading causes of death and illness here. KHF provides civic and community engagement grants that address the fact that health in Kansas is dependent upon where people live and how participation in the election process and local meetings play a role. The funder also awards education grants because low education rates are linked to poor health outcomes.
Grants range between about $5,000 and $25,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the grantee listing page of the funder’s website. Grantmaking focuses on the entire state of Kansas. Past local grantees include the ACLU Foundation of Kansas, the Central Kansas Foundation for Alcohol and Chemical Dependency, and Girls on the Run of the Flint Hill.
This foundation accepts grant applications from nonprofits and issues requests for proposals to provide local grant opportunities. Impact and Capacity Grant opportunities are posted on the foundation website, and past application periods have been open between May and August. The foundation notifies applicants of its decision within 45 days after submitting an application. Direct general questions to the staff at info@khf.org or 316-262-7676.
