PROFILE: Established in 2006, the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky (FAK) is a community foundation based in Hazard, Kentucky. FAK is grounded in the principles of rural development philanthropy and has a strategic framework for community building, capacity building and endowment building. The foundation seeks to build leadership development skills, citizen involvement, strategic planning, stronger collaborations and a greater culture of philanthropy. FAK aims to be “a catalyst for community collaboration and charitable giving – building capacity and creating permanent, locally controlled community assets as sustainable resources to improve quality of life and place in southeastern Kentucky.” It funds local efforts for arts, culture, recreation, civic engagement, education, health and wellness, housing and family assets, youth development and the environment
The Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky supports a broad range of needs in the local Kentucky communities it serves. FAK funds local efforts related to economic opportunity, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, leadership, collaboration, capital investments, education and trust at the local level. It works to promote a positive regional vision, fostering strong community leadership, strengthening local nonprofits, supporting children and youth, growing local economies and revitalizing downtowns. FAK has eight affiliates in 12 counties to specifically serve more local communities. Affiliate funds are located in Breathitt, Clinton, Floyd, Jackson, Leslie, Perry, Pikeville and Upper Cumberland.
